Top 5 Reasons YOU Need a Hipster PDA

In todays fast paced, go go go world everyone needs some kind of “pda” type system/devise. There are many electronic PDA organizers, Smart phones and even mini computers that promise to help you get and stay organized and keep everything in order so why on earth would someone chose to use a paper version? Something you can’t sink between your mobile devise, work computer and macbook pro?? There are many reasons and here are the TOP 5 Reasons why YOU need a Hipster PDA.

1. You can truly take it anywhere (except the shower and well a electronic pda cant go into the shower either) and you don’t need to worry about cords, cables, batteries or “stylus”
2. It won’t die on you when you need it most.

3. By nature It’s small, thin, flat, and can be customized to any size you wish, with many different internal and external color and template options.

4. It’s simple and effective- write it down, do it, cross it out. DONE

5. It doesn’t and will never become obselete and or need “updates” after 2 months

If that doesn’t convince you check out

Take YOUR Name Back

We’ve all done it, we’ve all googled ourselves to see the results, in my case nothing shows up, which for me is double edged sword. What can you do if you are not impressed with the results? or if say you share the same name as a porn star ? (as one of my friends does) Is there anything you can do? With all the reports, articles and information out there telling us that hiring managers are “google-ing” prospective employees a picture of you drunk at a party can hurt more then you ego.

The first thing to do is delete your MySpace account (or modify so you cannot be found by your name). Remove all photos that you wouldn’t want a recruiter or HR Rep to see, at the very least, any and all posts or comments that you’ve left on MySpace that include your actual name. Then if possible ask your “friends” to do the same.

Got some embarrassing pictures posted on Flickr or Smug Mug? time to delete them. If someone else posted a photo of you, ask them very, very nicely to take it down or remove your name from the tags, descriptions, comments, etc. If for some reason they won’t oblige, try sending the company an email and explain to them that you wish to have a picture of yourself removed. You will need to provide the exact URL to the picture and explain why you’d like it taken down. There is absolutely no guarantee that they’ll accommodate you, they probably will not but it’s worth a try

I have been told more then once to never, ever, use an email address when applying for a job (or on your resume) that you’ve used to sign up for online forums or social networking sites. I’m not to sure how i feel about this one, I tend to use the same email address for everything and I am not a point where I feel the need to change that. I post on forums, I have typical social network pages but I do not post anything that I wouldn’t want my parents or a HR Rep to see. I have heard that Recruiters will search for your email address right after they search for your name. So before you post that image or reply to that comment think: Do I really want <fill in blank> to know that I agree with <blank> or spend a lot of time on this <insert offensive site here> forum?

After removing or modifying the bad stuff there are a few sites you can use to create more positive links to your name. LinkedIn is a good starting point. It is a business oriented social networking site and due to its high pagerank, creating a LinkedIn profile is a great way to get your name higher in search results. After you create an account and fill out all of the profile information (which can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour, depending on how detailed you want your profile to be), you’ll want to make sure your profile (or at least part of it) is public. To do so, click the Edit My Public Profile tab.

You can also register for a ZIKI account, they are a newer site and Ziki makes a pretty bold claim – “Ziki members are guaranteed to appear in the first position of Google, Yahoo & MSN search results when their name is searched, given that Ziki buys sponsored links. Ziki community members can therefore create, manage and optimize their online presence while controlling their image.”

Just be aware that what you post to the internet can and will be seen by many many people, some who may want to be “web friends” and some who may want to offer you a job.

The hidden victims of foreclosure’s

I came across an article in Business Week about foreclosure’s and their hidden victims… The Family Pets.

As the housing market continues to plummet and wages and raises and even jobs become more scarce, the mortgage mess is getting messier.

When sheriffs, property inspectors and real estate agents  go to a deserted or foreclosed upon home they are finding malnourished and flea-ridden animals, feces-covered floors and urine-soaked furniture, piles of rotting garbage,  and even swarms of diseased mosquitoes.

According to an online foreclosure research company there were over 147,000 foreclosures filings (default notices, auction sale notices and bank repos) just in April of this year(up 62% from last year)  This means that nasty horrid awful condition homes are becoming more and more common and since at least 50% of families have pets this means more and more abused and neglected animals.

I imagine that knowing you are going to lose your home is an awful feeling but being so irresponsible and losing all pride of ownership is flat out disgusting. Some people leave the water on to flood the house and cause mold so that the house is destroyed and cannot be sold. There are reports of people tearing their chandeliers or ceiling fans out of the ceiling, kicking the doors and walls in so that the ants, roaches, rats, mosquitoes, scorpions, and other wild life can take over.

It’s crazy what people will do, I have never had anything foreclosed upon or repossessed but i have been poor and have lost all hope and still could not imagine being so careless and spiteful. If i was in a similar position to these individuals who are destroying what was once theirs and pretty much killing innocent animals for no reason i would only be mad at myself for getting into the position to be foreclosed upon no matter how much “bad luck” or how much it wasn’t my “fault”.

Beyond the mess and beyond the destruction of property lies another more heart wrenching issue. Pets. The pets are often silent sufferers during the foreclosure process. People abandon and trash their homes and leave pets behind. These are the pets being rescued from feces and urine infested homes with piles of rotting garbage,  and  swarms of bugs.

Student Loans…

While reading through finance and debt articles i stumbled across a bit of advise, a bit that is 7 years to late but maybe not too late for someone else…

“Your total borrowing shouldn’t exceed what you expect to make your first year out of school.”

Most college grads make under$40k the first year, not all some make well over and some make well under… my spin on this advise would be not to borrow a total of more then $40k, an average yearly salary.

This advise is wise and unrealistic, you may enter into college with aspirations of becoming part of the business world where your starting salary could be well north of $40k and end up changing your mind and becoming a writing major where you starting salary could be south of $30k ????

So i guess the best advise is… if you are not yet in college or if you are a current student try not to take out loans… YES they are easy to get and will give you extra money to live of and to buy new computers and books and things that look and seem to be essential but they are not and that $1500 computer that you had to have in your junior year is going to cost you $5k by the time you pay back your lenders.

School is expensive, my parents wont pay or cant and i have no savings HOW do i get an education???? with out loans???

State schools, scholarships, work study grants, part time jobs… there are many ways, I went to an expensive private school, i had scholarships and grants and i STILL have over $75k in private loans and over $20k in federal loans… and TRUST me you do NOT want to be in my position, i was led on that i could pay my loans back in as little a month as i needed and for as long as it took, this is NOT TRUE!

If you MUST  borrow, borrow from the government, many employers pay back some of your government loans and they are federally mandated, have lower and regulated interest and require NO Credit Check or High credit scores to refinance after graduation.

I hope this info helps someone, I wish i had it years ago…

5 Tips To Increase Productivity

1. Allocate 20% of your day – between 1.5 to 2 hours – to working on your most important objectives. If you don’t do this, you will find that the really important tasks somehow never get finished when they should.

2. Tackle the hardest things first. All of us like to do what’s easy, its human nature, no one wants to do the hard things, especially not first… But you must get into the hard stuff – and the best time to get stuck into it is first up, when you can give it all you’ve got.

3. Have a maximum of 3 major things on your to do list at a time, any more than 3 is asking for failure. Set your priorities according to what needs to be done asap, what is time sensitive ? what can wait a few hours? what have you been putting of? It is always a good idea to tackle tasks in order of priority.

4. At the beginning of each week, or day, or even month…make a list of your goals, try to refer to your list regularly, adding things that come up and taking away tasks that no longer need your attention, also make sure you stay on track. A whiteboard is a very visible and convenient tool for keeping this list going or a portable list you can carry, whatever works best for you.

5. Group ALL of your similar activities together, if you need to make a bunch of phone calls set a side one part of the day; send all emails at set times, try to aim for no more then 3 email sessions daily, also use one of these to deal with all incoming mail.

In addition try to notice where and when time is slipping away from you… do you drift off and lose focus midday? do you get distracted by the internet and reading blogs? is instant messaging your downfall? once you know what is distracting you and holding you back from being productive you can work on eliminating the distraction.

Surprising info about being a VEGAN

I have been a Vegetarian since i was 13 years old, I chose to go vegetarian for a few reasons the main one being that i just didn’t like the taste of meat. For the past 3 years i have struggled with going vegan, i was vegan for about 4 months and then i “relapsed” a few months later i was vegan again for about 1 month. I struggle because i LOVE cheese and sweets(most of which have eggs and or milk in them) After extensive research i have decided yet again to go vegan, this time i am confident that i will last a lot longer then 4 months, this is a life style choice, a health choice and a long term decision. I won’t go into the environmental or saving the animals debates and sides of veganisim only the interesting health related information i found.

There were a few things that i found during research that i think everyone should be aware of. First i should start by saying that a Vegan is someone who, for various reasons, chooses to avoid using or consuming animal products. While vegetarians choose not to use flesh foods, vegans also avoid dairy and eggs. Also most vegans also avoid fur, leather, wool, down, and cosmetics or chemical products tested on animals. The consumption of animal fats and proteins has been linked to heart disease, colon and lung cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, kidney disease, hypertension, obesity, and a number of other debilitating conditions.

Dairy products, which contain no fiber or complex carbohydrates at all, are about as high-fat as they come: A glass of milk is 49 percent fat; Swiss and cheddar cheeses are more than 65 percent fat; ice cream and yogurt are almost 50 percent fat; even “low-fat” milk and “nonfat” cottage cheese, which many consumers mistakenly believe to be fat-free, are more than 20 percent fat . The dairy industry tries to deceive us-labeling milk “2 percent,” when, in fact, more than 30 percent of that milk’s calories come from fat, or labeling cottage cheese “non fat,” when one-fifth of its calories come from fat! Also Some doctors suspect that the fat, animal protein, sugar, and hormones in milk irritate the skin, causing break-outs.

Some quick facts:

Meat is full of traces of antibiotics, hormones, toxins produced by stress & pesticide residues that become concentrated from all the crops they have eaten

Fish contain heavy metals & other pollutants -many of which originated on farms

Farmed animals contain upto 50% saturated fat in their bodies

Vegans have a %57 reduced risk of getting heart disease

Not all wines, beers and spirits are vegan – or even vegetarian, some even contain ox blood.

Bone char is used by some makers of white sugar during the refining process (around 50% of all made from sugar cane, according to Wikipedia).

Milk has pus in it.
